PAS Pilot project to assist
working persons with disabilities

Volunteers are needed to participate in the Florida Work Incentive Personal Assistance Services (PAS) Program, a six-month pilot that will run January through June 2007.

All persons with significant disabilities in Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties who are employed at least 24 hours per week or have an offer of employment in hand (documentation required) and need a personal care assistant (PCA) to help them with activities of daily living* are urged to apply by December 15, 2006. Participants will have the option to hire their own PCA or use a PCA provider agency.

Persons who want to apply for participation in the pilot program should contact FACIL no later than December 15, 2006. Call toll free 1-866-575-6004, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., or email facil.april@earthlink.net.  “This program is for people with disabilities who would rather work than stay home and collect social security payments; who would rather be independent than dependent. This program is for young people with disabilities who are leaving home and the care of their parents to become independent and make it on their own,” explains Martina Schmid, Executive Director of the Florida Association of Centers for Independent Living (FACIL).

Persons who want to apply for participation in the pilot program should contact FACIL no later than December 15, 2006. Call toll free 1-866-575-6004, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., or email facil.april@earthlink.net.

* Activities of daily living (ADLs) include: dressing, bathing, bowel and bladder care, food preparation and assistance with eating, and transportation.
